Steven Hou, Undressing, 2025
Performers undress and re-dress, doing it all again in this group performance made for Hai-Wen Lin’s drobe exhibition at the Chinese American Museum of Chicago. The dance begins around the task of deinstalling the exhibition; furniture from the musuem’s archive are dressed in garments that also fit a human body. I was curious about the affective and sensorial distance of these everyday pieces of furniture, turned into shuttered objects by the museum, then into models dressed in Hai-Wen's custom-fitted garments. What are the physics of history? What are the kinetics of time? And if we can sense these things, how might we try to do so?
